When Silence Cost Us: The Lesson of Speaking Up for Indigenous Consent

By Kebonemotse Amos

Daily writing prompt
Write about a time when you didn’t take action but wish you had. What would you do differently?

Last night, a dream took me back to that room—polished tables, smooth words, and a ticking clock. Decisions on land, development, and futures. But my people—our memory, our pharmacy, our economy—were shadows on the edge. No real FPIC, no real inclusion. I didn’t speak then. It cost us.

If I dream again tomorrow, I will negotiate as if it’s for my last breath, because in that breath lives the Okavango Panhandle, Southern Africa’s Indigenous lifeways, and the fading language of youth.

The lesson? No more silence. I will champion biocultural diversity, document Indigenous knowledge, defend genetic resources, and ensure equitable benefit-sharing. The CBD frameworks aren’t just policies—they are the armor of Indigenous communities from Botswana to Namibia to South Africa and beyond.

Next time, I won’t just speak—I will secure the future in every word.
